Chinese influence on bitcoin: ripple ceo's perspective

Speaking to the audience at the 2018 Stifel Insight Cross Sector Conference in Boston, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse emphasized China’s dominant role in the bitcoin landscape. He mentioned that four major mining entities in China collectively hold control over more than half of bitcoin’s market. His concern was clear: “How can we be sure that China won’t exert its influence over bitcoin? It’s unlikely many nations would want to adopt a currency dominated by China,” he stated.

The notion of bitcoin evolving into a dominant global currency has been gaining traction among various influential individuals. However, Garlinghouse deemed the concept of bitcoin as the primary global currency to be “absurd” and illogical. His conviction is that no significant economy would permit such an occurrence.

China’s Unique Position in Bitcoin’s Ecosystem

China holds a formidable position due to two primary factors. Firstly, the country hosts a significant portion of the world’s bitcoin mining activities. This dominance allows it to influence the coin’s supply and adjust transaction fees based on the difficulty of mining operations. Over the past year, these heightened fees have made regular bitcoin transactions less appealing and trading substantially more expensive. Secondly, China is home to some of the largest exchanges for trading bitcoin.

Given these advantages, China’s influence over bitcoin is considerable.
